Honoring Their Being

Muktananda

– December 2024 –

Dear Sangha and friends,

It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of James Pingel, whom we know as Mukti.

Mukti was a powerful, sincere soul, deeply devoted to the Lakota tradition and the awakening of this world. Many of you had the privilege of knowing him personally, and others have surely heard ShantiMayi’s stories of Mukti and the Sundance ceremonies.

One story stands out as the essence of Mukti’s spirit. In a moment of extraordinary offering, he dedicated himself to Maharajji and Prabhu Aapa Jago by pulling nine bull skulls around the Sundance Arbour—not once, but twice. And at the end, he broke free from the skulls in one of the most profound ceremonial moments that I have witnessed. ShantiMayi was by his side the entire time, holding his hand, while Sangha behind them, supporting him with our prayer. It was a radiant act of sacrifice, love, and prayer for the planet—perhaps the greatest offering of Mukti’s life.

Mukti’s laughter, his strength, and his reverence remain with us. He walked this path with profound dedication, always calling ShantiMayi “Master” with the deepest respect. His presence was a gift, and though he is no longer here, the prayer of his life echoes on.

While looking for  a photo, I came across an old recording of Muktananda offering the Thank You Song.  Enjoy.
