The Sacha Arati in our Home
Origin and meaning
The Arati is a ceremony that was born long ago in India and is still performed from North to South. It is being carried out once at sunrise (or morning) and once at sunset (or evening) in homes, in nature, in businesses and in temples, not only in India, but all over the world. It is a ceremony that gives recognition to the light of wisdom in all beings. It is often offered from disciple to Master, from Heart to Heart with Heart.
ShantiMayi continues this tradition to honor the Sacha lineage (Giri Nari, Sacha Baba, Kacha Baba, Kulanandaji, Sacha Baba, Hans Raj Maharajji and ShantiMayi) and all our spiritual ancestors. This lineage lives for and supports the enlightenment of all beings.
The heart of this ceremony is the circular shaped moving of light in front of the murti (shape) or photo of the Gurus, as a mark of honor to the divine(1) clarity which they represent, to honor the light in the Guru and disciple. Light is light is light...
Although the core of the Arati is the same everywhere, other lines of Gurus and other ashrams have their own variations. ShantiMayi has given three parts to the Sacha Arati, which will be described here, for everyone who wants to do this at home.
Sacha Baba received the words of the Sankulp in meditation. He saw them in many colors and asked some seekers who were present to write it down. These words became his promise, so Maharajji tells us.
Sacha Sankulp means desire, the pure desire of the saints. The line of victory was composed by ShantiMayi. ShantiMayi asks that the structure of the Arati remain exactly as it is. Please add nothing and subtract nothing. This Arati is designed by Heart to include all great beings (in the line: Sub sant and Yogi Ki Jay) within its honorable recognition. This is the Sacha Arati.
Preparing the Puja Table
At the altar or puja-table (puja means veneration) the four elements are present: earth represented by flowers, air represented by incense(2), fire represented by candle light or ghee lamps and water(3). All of the elements come from the divine; and in preparing the puja-table you offer the elements back to the divine.
It speaks for itself that the photos of the line of Gurus are present on the puja-table. Ganesha also is present. About his broken tusk ShantiMayi once said:
"It means that which is broken is also perfect."
Purification Mantras
Before beginning, ring a bell with the right hand. This signifies a calling for all allies and guides to give support, and for all to Awaken.
During the chanting, small spoonfuls of water are gently tossed out into the different directions of the meditation space. On the last line, during the word 'suchi' empty one spoonful over your own head.
Om apavitraha pavit ro va sarva
Avastangatopiva yah'asmret
Pundari kamgachaha
Sa bahya byantra suchi
An appeal to purify the area and the items of worship
Sipping of water for inner purification (a spoon of water is in the right hand):
Om Keshwaya namaha (sip)
Om Madhwaya namaha (sip)
Om Narayanaya namaha (sip)
Om Hrishikeshaya namaha (wash hands)
The above are names of Vishnu, the maintainer of the universe, performing heroic and spiritual acts at different times
Offering Mantras
Each of the following may be chanted 1,3 or 5 times. Offerings should be made with the right hand, with the left hand touching the right hand or arm. Offerings are given to the pictures or other sacred objects on the puja table.
Om Shnanam samarpyami
Offering a cleansing and relaxing bath for the puja. (spoonfuls of water)
Om Pushpam samarpyami
Offering of flowers
Om Chandanam samarpyami
Offerering of sweet smelling sandalwood, tilak
Om Doopam samarpyami
Offering of incense
Om deepam darsyami
Offering of light (a candlelight may be waved in clockwise circles around the puja)
The Ganesha Mantra
ShantiMayi asks that before all pujas or ceremonies this mantra be chanted by whoever is leading the puja.
Om parvati pataye
Hara hara hara mahadev
Gajananam buta
Ganadi sevatam
Kapitha jambu
Phalacharu bhakshanam
Umasutam shoka
Vinasha karakam
Namami vigneshvara
Pada pankajam
Translation:
O elephant-faced god, Ganesha
You are served by the attendants of Shiva and you eat forest apples and blackberries. You are Uma's son, the destroyer of sorrows.
I bow to the lotus feet of the remover of obstacles
Opening Mantra
Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu
Guru Devo Maheshvaraha
Guru Sachat Parabrahma
Tasmai Shree Guruve Namaha
Translation:
The Guru is the creator
The Guru is the maintainer
The Guru is the destroyer of ignorance
The Guru is the Truth beyond the highest reality.
To that Guru I bow
Performing the Arati: The Sankulp
It is a ceremony expressing respect and veneration. Everyone stands during the Arati. The Arati is performed by call and response. The person reciting the Arati calls and the participants repeat (respond to) the Arati.
. Before you start, after an inner bow, put some water in the palm of your right hand. Your left hand is touching your right hand while you recite the Sankulp.(4)
. After you have pronounced the Sankulp pour the water from your hand onto the ground: you give the water, enriched with the wish of your line of Gurus, back to the earth.

Performing the Arati: TheWaving of the Lights
In the Indian Arati clarified butter or ghee is used as fuel and rolled cotton as a wick. This is a pure fuel for this fire and is used all over the world.(5)
The light is being moved clockwise, "since", as ShantiMayi has explained, "so is the movement of the creation of life." Again your left hand is touching your right arm.
After the Arati the light is given to each participant together with the sandalwood paste.(6) Here it is not about contact from person to person: light is offered and received.

Notes
(1) Divine here means undivided. This is how ShantiMayi uses the word divine.
(2) Incense is said to carry the essence of the prayers or meditation to upper regions of consciousness, while scenting the room and cleaning the atmosphere. It is recommended, though not absolutely necessary, to use Nag Champa, because ShantiMayi once said that this aroma has good meditative qualities and also it reminds people of Her presence because it's used all over the world, wherever She is. Incense refers to the ever-penetrating qualities of the Absolute.
(3) If possible put a drop of Ganga-water in the water you are using. ShantiMayi says that just one drop is already working as homeopathy.
(4) This symbolizes that your hands are working together instead of one hand doing this and the other doing something opposite.
(5) If ghee is not available, it's possible to use a candle. At festive events camphor may be used. Camphor has a bright flame and burns completely leaving no remains, not even ash. This stands for the ego sense that eventually dissolves again in the universal flame, without leaving a trace behind.
(6) Sandalwood paste might be available in a Hare Krishna Center in your country. If not its possible to use essential oil of sandalwood.
(7) In India it's very important to use your right hand to apply sandal-oil or paste to the Master's Third Eye point on the photo glass, because the left hand is considered unclean... The use of the ring-finger feels refined compared to the use of the first and second finger; the first finger also symbolizes the ego-sense.
(8) The dot of sandalwood paste on the third eye is called a tilak. The Bindu point is the same as the tilak. The Indian women use the tilak sometimes as cosmetic beauty and have perhaps forgotten its pure message:
the search and desire of the One; the two physical eyes see dualism, the inner eye sees the Oneness.
108 recitations or any combination of 9, 18, 27, 36 and so on.

Long Life Prayer for ShantiMayi
To you, ShantiMayi, we offer up this long life prayer.
With an open, loving heart we generate the mind of full Awakening.
We pray for your well being in body, speech and mind.
We send our prayers of love and health to you,
our Guru, friend and blessed Mother.
May all the Diamond Awakened ones pour their
blessings of long life, health and happiness upon you.
Enthused by wisdom and compassion, and a wish to free
all beings from the illusions of this world,
You generate the heart and mind of loving-kindness.
May your teachings of love and compassion for all life
spread like the rays of the morning sun of dawn,
Dispelling the darkness of ignorance.
As long as space remains, as long as sentient beings
remain, may you also remain ShantiMayi, to dispel the
sufferings of this world.
Samaya, samaya, samaya*
ShantiMayi wishes that you repeat this prayer twice, once for Maharajji as well.
*Samaya is an oath taken by Bodhisattvas and Siddha Masters to uphold and maintain a promise or a prayer. So you, the disciple, take this oath to uphold and maintain this long life prayer for ShantiMayi.
